| | South Africa have claimed three medals on day one of the BMX World Championships in Pietermaritzburg. One of them is a gold medal. Georgina Grassie a youngster from Johannesburg was crowned champion in the section for girls aged nine. Grassie finished ahead of New Zealand pair Jessie Smith and Mikayla Bearman.
The first day of the UCI BMX World championships at the Royal Showgrounds in Pietermaritzburg saw nine year old Johannesburg schoolgirl Georgina Grassie became the nation's newest world champion when she won her 9 Girls main final to give South Africa their first title of the champs.
South Africa bagged three medals on the opening day Durban racer Axel Webster grabbed the silver medal in the 11 Boys main final, while the third medal came from Nicole von Munster in the 10 Girls final.
New Zealand racers were dominant in the junior challenge classes, winning golds in the 13 Girls through Tahlia Hansen, 5,6 Boys through Lachlan Stevens Mcnabb, with the 7 Boys gold going to Rico Bearman.
1100 riders from 37 nations have entered the competition, racing on a world first track that sees an elite track alongside the cruiser class track, and spanning an endurance testing 385 metres from start to finish.
